Caring for Mother Earth

One of the main reasons I started Down to Earth Cuisine was wanting to be able to control what I fed people. My background is in restaurants. I have worked in every type of restaurant/ hotel or catering company you can imagine. I have worked everything from small mom and pop restaurants to fine dining restaurants and anything in between. You don’t always see the best ingredients in restaurants. It’s all about the best bang for your buck, adding to the bottom dollar. I didn’t feel right feeding people all these GMO – laden oils and pesticide-ridden non-organic foods. This is what spurred the idea of starting my own business. I learned a lot about “slow foods”, GMO’s and the behind the scenes of what all is in food nowadays during culinary school. I wanted to do something where I could serve people non-gmo organic food that was responsibly sourced and good for the environment. Over the years I have become more and more interested in eating healthy (don’t get me wrong I enjoy a cheeseburger or pizza) and living a non-toxic home.

One thing that has become more pressing and concerning, is the health of our oceans. It is said that by the year 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish! There are more and more videos of tons of plastic on our waters and its adverse effects on the marine life of the world. This deeply concerns me seeing as how much life depends on the ocean. We are top of the food chain of marine animals. I feel it is our duty to help clean up our oceans as we are the ones who have gotten it to the point it is at now.

Using reusable grocery bags is one easy way to reduce the amount of plastic we contribute to landfills, streams, and oceans. They are cheap and can save hundreds of bags per family each year. Reusable water bottles can have a great impact on the number of plastic water bottles we throw away. Bamboo toothbrushes are another way to reduce the plastic you throw away. Buying in bulk and avoiding single wrapped items is another great way to think about purchasing items that can positively affect our plastic trash output. I feel the more we can get people excited about improving oceanic health will benefit us and generations to come.

Fighting for Trash Free Seas is an amazing company that id doing a lot of good things for cleaning up our oceans! They have cleaned up over 200 million pounds of trash since 1985 and continues to be a front runner in conservation.
